Facility Masters Award
The Facility Masters Award is a recognition program designed to reward school districts that have implemented best practices and processes for excellence in school facility maintenance.Program Goals:
- Promote best practices in facility management
- Improve school facilities
- Recognize school districts at the state/national level for implementing best practices
- Support ASBO state affiliates and other educational organizations
- Focus on processes and practices
- Fight the status quo
The Facility Masters Award is sponsored by a state professional organization that is affiliated with a national organization, such as the Association of School Business Officials International (ASBO) or the National School Plant Managers Association. The award may also be sponsored by a state organization that is associated with school facility administration.
Background – There are several “mega trends” taking place that highlight the importance of sound school facilities maintenance programs that built upon best practices and processes.
- Equity lawsuits are demanding that sound maintenance and operations standards for educational facilities be established.
- There is a backlog of deferred maintenance in the billions of dollars throughout the nation.
- The economic climate of high unemployment, failed banks and investment institutions, and home foreclosures all contribute to decreasing funds for education and facilities maintenance.
- There is an expectation that 21st century learners will be taught in safe, clean, and well maintained environments that also protect the capital investment of the community.
Effective school facility maintenance planning contributes to:
- Instructional effectiveness and financial wellbeing
- Improving the cleanliness, orderliness and safety of the school
- Reducing the operational costs and life cycle cost of a building
- Helping staff manage with limited resources
- Extending the useful life of buildings
- Increasing energy efficiency and helping the environment
Effective school facility maintenance planning is a result of implementing best practices and procedures as described in the award criteria.
